A senior education official, who was arrested in connection with the murder of his wife, has been released because of lack of evidence.
The 41-year-old man, who works in the Piet Retief district office of the Mpumalanga education department, was arrested after his wife, Nonhlanhla Ngubeni, was killed on Saturday.
Ngubeni, 35, who had filed for divorce and had obtained a protection order against her husband, was attacked in her home in Thandukukhanya in Piet Retief early on Saturday morning.
Her estranged husband was released on Monday because there was insufficient evidence linking him to the crime.
Police investigations are continuing.
Police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said Ngubeni's attackers, who had covered their faces with balaclavas, stabbed her several times and she died on the scene.
A friend visiting Ngubeni witnessed the killing but was unable to identify the perpetrators because they had covered their faces. - Sakhile Mokoena
