An Mpumalanga police officer appeared in court yesterday on charges of drunken and reckless driving.
Constable Mfundo Masuku, 26, was arrested on Sunday after police spotted him speeding in a VW Golf in KaNyamazane.
"Another constable, driving a bakkie very fast and recklessly, from the Lebombo border post tried to prevent police from arresting his friend," said KaNyamazane police spokesman Captain Phillip Fakude.
However, the driver of the bakkie drove away when Masuku bumped into a police van.
Masuku and two bystanders who threw bottles and broke the police van's window were arrested. Masuku was released on R1000 bail. It is not clear what happened to the bystanders.
