A business venture owned by a top SABC executive and a Sundowns player has collapsed.

Bob Mabena and Brian Baloyi are the joint owners of a franchise of Capellos restaurant situated in Newtown, Johannesburg. It has closed down.

Their restaurant is said to have closed because they could not afford the high rental and because "the business was not managed properly".

Yesterday the owners of Capellos restaurants said the Newtown eatery was closed because of mismanagement, but promised it will soon be reopened under a new owner.

The closure of the popular restaurant came amid complaints from business owners in Newtown that the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) charged high rental. They also blamed JDA for poor marketing of their businesses.

"I am not surprised that Capellos closed down. I can tell you that Mabena and Baloyi are victims of the JDA's ineptitude when it comes to marketing," said a tenant who chose to be anonymous.

"We are paying Rosebank rates and yet we are not reaching as many people as we were promised. I will not be surprised if more tenants move out."

Baloyi declined to speak to Sowetan, and Mabena's cellphone was switched off when we called.

Mabena is due to appear in a Pretoria court after being involved in an accident with minibus.
