A policeman who took a woman prisoner from a holding cell and allegedly raped her in a police vehicle was arrested after a male prisoner witnessed the incident.

The constable, based at Komatipoort police station in Mpumalanga, appeared in court on Friday and was released on a warning.

He was not asked to plead on charges of rape and assault and the case was postponed to April 17.

The prisoner who witnessed the incident reportedly warned the suspect about the dangers of having sex in a car. He said the car would have bad luck and might be involved in an accident.

The constable became angry and allegedly assaulted the prisoner. Other prisoners reported the assault to the station commissioner and the constable was arrested.

The woman who was allegedly raped by the cop is a Mozambican arrested for stabbing her boyfriend.

The cop has not been suspended yet and an internal investigation will be held into the matter.

Though police have opened a rape charge against the constable, the charge is likely to be withdrawn because the woman has reportedly said he is her lover.

A Lowveld police spokesman said the cop will appear before an internal disciplinary tribunal on charges relating to misconduct.
