Windybrow writers take to the stage

Writers who underwent a nine-month writing development programme at the Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow last year will have an opportunity to see their work on stage from next month.

Last year, the Windybrow initiated two programmes aimed at developing the writing skills of aspirant writers.

One was a spoken-word programme and the other was designed for playwrights. Both were designed to impart technical skills and artistic insight in the development of scripts for the stage. They were developed for the Windybrow by poet and academic Kgafela Oa Mogogodi.

Twenty aspirant writers were selected to participate in these intensive programmes and each produced a script for a play or a spoken-word performance.

Lindelwa Mahlabe, a spokesman for the theatre, said: "A key aspect of these programmes was the opportunity for interaction between the students, and experienced writers and theatre practitioners."

Among the tutors were acclaimed artists such as Jerry Mofokeng, Zenzi Mbuli, Don Mattera, Lesego Rampolokeng, Xoli Norman, Matshilo Motsei, Nokuthula Mazibuko, Lefifi Tladi and Tshepo Oa Mamatu.

Twelve scripts have been chosen for further development and performance at the Windybrow Theatre. Nine of these are plays and three are spoken-word pieces.

The Windybrow Writers On Stage will be launched on March 6 and the performances will run from March 7 to March 18.
