A con artist is trying to make money out of viewers of the popular SABC1 Wini-Khaya competition.
The man phoned one of them and told her she had won furniture. But, he said, to receive the prize she would have to SMS him R120 worth of airtime-voucher codes. He said he would use the airtime to phone her for directions when he delivered the prize. He introduced himself as a Wini-Khaya organiser.
"He said I had won furniture valued at R2500. I was so excited, even though I hadn't entered the competition."
SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said the corporation knew nothing about the scam.
The would-be victim alerted a Natal radio station,Igagasi 99,5. On Friday, during the breakfast show, Alex Mthiyane phoned the conman pretending to be related to thewinner. He asked when she would receive her prize. The man said he had to receive the R120 of airtime first because his "boys" would need to keep in touch with her to get directions to her house.
The police said no similar cases have been reported to them.
