Cup stepping stone to rugby greatness

The 10th edition of the yearly Vodacom Cup gets under way from Friday until the weekend of May 4, it was announced yesterday.

Jonathan Stones, South African Rugby managing director, made the announcement of the kickoff date at a news conference in Midrand.

Stones said they are grateful to their partners (Vodacom) for their immeasurable commitment towards the development of rugby.

Said Stones: "The competition serves to equip young and emerging players to develop their skills.

"The tournament has been instrumental in creating career opportunities in rugby for the past years.''

Some of the players who graduated from the event include Springbok captain John Smith, Bryan Habana, Jaque Fourie and Victor Matfield.

Piet Kraus, captain of the Falcons, said his charges are prepared to defend their title. Their opening game is against the Griffons in Welkom on Friday.

At the time of going to press the competition's organisers could not disclose the overall sponsorship and prizes.

Fixtures: Friday: Griffons v Falcons; Wildebeest v Boland Cavaliers; Border v Free State.

Saturday: BA Mighty Elephants v SWD; Pumas v Lions.
