Police in KwaZulu-Natal are hot on the heels of thugs who last week made off with two mobile libraries belonging to the provincial education department.

The thugs made off with the two buses used as mobile libraries after they held up staff at gunpoint at the Durban offices of the Department of Education.

The two buses, a Mitsubishi and Toyota, formed part of a fleet of 11 mobile libraries that were donated by Japan's Together with Asia and Africa Association (JTAAA) last year.

Both the buses are white in colour, with yellow and two blue stripes painted at the bottom.

Ina Cronje, who is the Kwazulu-Natal MEC for education, has appealed to members of the public to be on the lookout for the stolen buses.

She said anyone with information about the whereabouts of the buses should call 0800 204 353.

"Reading forms the basis of learning. The mobile buses are a solution to schools without libraries," said Cronje.

"By stealing these buses the thugs have robbed many children of their right to education."
