It was horrible and shocking; it was like a television movie. This is what survivors said about the accident involving two buses outside Makhado in Limpopo yesterday morning.
The accident happened after a bus driver tried to drive a donkey off the road and collided with another bus on the road, killing 17 passengers.
When Sowetan visited Siloam Hospital yesterday, there was a lot of activity. Some members of the community were enquiring about their relatives at the hospital but could not get answers because staff were busy and some of the patients had been taken to other hospitals.
Speaking from the casualty ward, Eunice Maswinga, a survivor, told Sowetan that she did not know what had happened until she was attended to by emergency medical services officials.
"I was going to work but unfortunately I did not make it to work," she said.
Another survivor, Makwarela Lavhengwa, who was also seriously injured, blamed animal owners for the accident.
"Owners must take care of their animals because they are too dangerous straying along the road," she said.
Lavhengwa, who struggled to talk, said there was nothing the bus drivers could have done.
She also thanked God for her survival.
