I was shocked to read about the tragic death of Mpho Kekana, six, who fell to her death while at school in Kempton Park.

I was appalled and disgusted by the school authorities' indifference and unsympathetic approach regarding the tragedy.

No caring and law-abiding school should leave pupils alone in a high-rise building without proper supervision. The cold-hearted attitude of director of Global Primary College, Johan van der Walt, leaves much to be desired.

For God's sake, how do they expect six-year-olds to foresee danger when they themselves are running a school without safety railings?

These are not schools, but unscrupulous businesses hell-bent on milking as much money as they can from desperate and unsuspecting parents.

It has taken the life of an innocent young girl for the Department of Education to realise that something must be done about the mushrooming of unconventional colleges in dilapidated buildings in our city centres.

Although it won't bring back the life of this young girl, I feel the department should conduct an audit of all inner-city schools. Those that are found to pose a health hazard and a threat to the lives of those who matter the most, the pupils, should be closed down before another life is lost.
