Barberton City Stars suffered their eighth defeat of the season when they narrowly went down 1-0 to Middelburg Saints in a boring match at Barberton prison ground on Saturday.

Stars, who have already resigned their chances of retaining the title, started the game the better side. Had it not been for poor finishing, they could have pocketed the three points.

The solitary goal came in the 44th minute from Mandla Matambo. Stars had to finish the game one man down after referee Elias Matletsa red-carded Hamilton "TK' Masunda in the 62nd minute for rough play.

Monneneng Mkhonto, Saints' coach, said the win give them an outside chance of clinching the league.

"We still have to play both Batau Killers and Mpumalanga Black Aces, who are favorites to win the league. Mathematically we stand a chance if we can beat both sides," he said.

Aaron Shongwe, Stars' coach, said: "The boys did all that was required from them. When it's not your day, it's really not."

Other results: Batau Killers 5, Winners 2; FC Barcelona 0, Secunda Eagles 2; FC Sporting 2, Leandra 2; FC Spurs 2, Walter Stars 2; FC Benfica 2, ELB Movers 0; Sekhukhune Masters 2, MP Highlanders 1.
