This rot must stop

The Department of Home Affairs has been riddled with corruption for far too long.

The Department of Home Affairs has been riddled with corruption for far too long.

It has been the worst performing department in government in the past three years.

The department has been so incompetent that in the 2004-05 financial year the auditor-general could not trust its financial records to form an opinion on its management.

Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi this week revealed that there was a plan to revamp the department and that the proposals were being considered by cabinet. The move is appreciated and we hope government will act swiftly to implement these far-reaching steps.

A large number of Home Affairs officials have - and still are - involved in corrupt activities involving hundreds of thousands of rands. These include the illegal issuing of identification documents and marriage certificates.

This rot in the department must be stopped.
