R5m in grants fraud to be repaid

About R5 million of taxpayers' money is to be paid back by the almost 6000 public servants who stole social grants.

A further 2000 face disciplinary action, and investigations and prosecutions are taking place against many others, said Social Welfare Minister Zola Skweyiya in parliament yesterday.

A total of 2560 public servants have also been taken to court, of whom 2 056 have been convicted and sentenced.

More than 45000 civil servants were fingered by the police and other crime-fighting agencies for illegally taking grants from the state. It is estimated that social grants fraud costs the taxpayer about R1,5 billion every year. - Waghied Misbach
