Meanwhile, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) said while it was disappointed with cases of negligence, they pointed to poor working conditions as a source of the problem.
Itumeleng Molatlhegi, Denosa's spokesman, said: "We have a huge shortage of nurses in South Africa. In most hospitals a nurse has to take care of between 40 to 60 patients alone."
He said nurses were also underpaid, which forced them to moonlight.
The South African Nursing Council said it would only conduct an investigation into the matter once a formal complaint had been lodged.
