Protesting students at the Vaal University of Technology yesterday forced officials to suspend lectures and close the institution.

Students protested after management issued a directive that those who owed fees and those who were in their sixth year were to leave the institution. They started boycotting lectures on Monday and the management of the university closed the institution with effect from yesterday until Monday.

"They caused disruptions with their toyi-toyi," an official said. The vice-chancellor and principal, Professor Irene Moutlana, yesterday sent out notices suspending lectures and ordering students to vacate the institution with immediate effect.
