Some 38 clerics met in Dar es Salaam for a week-long discussion on the future of the crisis-ridden church.
"This is an internal meeting and we will discuss and hope to resolve our issues," Donald Ntentemela, archbishop for the diocese of central Tanganyika, said.
The conference, expected to be a showdown between the Global South conservatives from Asia, Africa and Latin America and liberals from the West, is being attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the spiritual head of the 77million-strong Anglican Communion.
On his arrival in Tanzania Williams conceded that the church was in dire straits, but hoped the meeting would forge a united front.
Since the US Episcopal Church consecrated Gene Robinson, an openly gay pastor, as bishop of New Hampshire in 2003, the Global South has rejected funding from the Anglican faction that supported the move and threatened to split. - Sapa-AFP
