They could profit and develop the country at the same time, Lekota told a media briefing at parliament.
By investing in the DRC, South African companies could create jobs and provide an incentive for exiles to return to their country.
Rebuilding the DRC would provide opportunities for investment in that country's roads and other infrastructure. Lekota has given an undertaken that the SA military will remain in the DRC until there is peace and stability there. An early withdrawal could shatter the peace in the DRC, which has a 40-year history of conflict.
Lekota said that before troops leave the DRC it is important to strengthen structures, sustain the democratic process and revitalise the economy.
He ruled out similar, direct intervention in conflict-ridden Somalia because South Africa's military capability is already overstretched, but South Africa would play a role in training Somali personnel. - Sapa
