Two brothers accused of hacking a Grade 11 pupil to death appeared briefly in the Lehurutshe magistrates' court yesterday on charges of murder.
Thabo Mokgaotsi, 21, and Legoane Mokgaotsi, 22, of Mokgola village outside Zeerust in North West, are accused of hacking Goitse Menwe, 20, to death last Saturday.
The case was postponed to February 20 for a bail application.
It is alleged that Menwe, a pupil at Phakedi High School, had a quarrel with one of the Mokgaotsi brothers at a tavern over a girl.
According to the investigating officer, Menwe was hacked four times on the head and died on the spot. He said police were called at about midnight to investigate a murder at a local tavern.
When they arrived at the scene of the crime, they found blood all over the place.
The suspects were apprehended the same night in the vicinity of the crime.
The death comes at a time when the North West Department of Education has deployed motivational speakers at more than 300 high schools in the province to combat increasing violence at schools.
The brothers were remanded in custody until their next appearance.
