A would-be rapist was allegedly bitten by a snake while queuing for his turn to rape a teenager in Numbi near Hazyview, Mpumalanga, on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old woman was walking with her 24-year-old boyfriend when they heard a gunshot.

The boyfriend told the woman not to run because they were not sure where the shot came from.

A few minutes later three men - two with firearms, one with a knife - emerged from the darkness and demanded money from the boyfriend. When he told them he did not have money they shot him in the chest.

Police said the thugs then covered the woman's eyes so she could not identify the place they were dragging her to.

In the nearby bushes they ordered her to undress.

She told police that two men raped her then the other one was still waiting for his turn when they heard him shouting: "Kungilumile, kungilumile" - I've been bitten.

She went home to inform her parents, who called the police and told them about the incident.

The Masoyi police spokesman, Jiyela Sibiya, confirmed the incident, saying that the boyfriend was found dead the next morning.

Police are now searching in hospitals throughout Mpumalanga for a man who was bitten by a snake.
