In his state of the nation speech, President Thabo Mbeki said the government would speed up the implementation of the initiative this year.

For its part, the National Taxi Alliance remains unbowed and is forging ahead with its planned court action to block the implementation.

A resolution to the stalemate is unlikely to be reached soon - hence the need for a mediator to promote dialogue.

Court action will likely cause further delays to 2010 World Cup preparations. We urge both parties to iron out their differences - once and for all - for the sake of the country.
