Three people died instantly and seven others were injured when a minibus taxi in which they were travelling overturned between Barkly East and Lady Grey in Eastern Cape at the weekend.
Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea said the accident, which occurred on Saturday, was caused by a burst tyre.
Three passengers, two women and a man, died at the scene.
"It is said that the taxi was coming from Gauteng carrying passengers to a funeral at Engcobo," Machaea said.
He said three of those who were injured were in a critical condition and had to be transferred to an East London hospital. The other four were taken to Barkly East Hospital.
l In another accident, four passengers died in a horrific crash involving two buses in Eastern Cape on Friday.
Three people died at the scene and the fourth died on the way to hospital.
Machaea said both buses were travelling from Gauteng to Eastern Cape when the accident occurred on the N6 between Jamestown and Queenstown.
The buses were from Khuseleka and Roadlink bus companies.
"The accident occurred when the first bus, from Khuseleka, turned to the right side, and the other one, coming from behind, tried to overtake. The buses collided and then overturned," said Machaea.
A total of 46 passengers were injured, some with fractured bones. They were taken to Queenstown's Frontier Hospital. Machaea said 12 of the injured were in a critical condition and were transferred to Frere Hospital in East London.
Machaea said cases of culpable homicide and negligent driving were being investigated.
