There is hope at last for pensioners from Alexandra, Johannesburg, who were kicked out of their homes during the political violence of the early 1990s.

The elderly women who sought refuge in the deserted council offices yesterday said that authorities were at last attending to their problem.

"We will be having a meeting with officials from the the Johannesburg city council to discuss the matter. They have promised they will build us houses in River Park," said Hilda Mohlomi, one of the displaced pensioners.

She said there was action only after their plight was reported in Sowetan.

Johannesburg spokesman Nthatisi Modingoane confirmed that council officials had met with the displaced people and were collecting information from them.
