Uneasy calm returns to settlement after street battles

An uneasy calm returned to the Barcelona informal settlement near Daveyton in Ekurhuleni yesterday following skirmishes and running battles between youths and the police on Tuesday.

Youth leader Kenneth Maduna and ANC local councillor Zodwa Zwane are in hiding because of tensions between residents and the authorities.

The protest earlier this week by more than 200 youths followed complaints to Ekurhuleni municipality by residents of Barcelona about poor service delivery.

Maduna, who was arrested on Tuesday over the violence but later released, said intimidation by the police would not scare them into ending the protest.

An ANC source confirmed that councillor Zwane was in hiding following threats to her life.
