We need fresh-thinking leaders

After the Presidency denied putting pressure on FNB, or even having any knowledge of the anti-crime campaign at all, FNB's Paul Harris and government spokesman Themba Maseko seem to be the only people who can tell us what led to the last-minute withdrawal of the bank's campaign.

After the Presidency denied putting pressure on FNB, or even having any knowledge of the anti-crime campaign at all, FNB's Paul Harris and government spokesman Themba Maseko seem to be the only people who can tell us what led to the last-minute withdrawal of the bank's campaign.

In approaching FNB, was Maseko acting on behalf of President Thabo Mbeki in his official capacity or was he taking up the role of Mbeki's campaign manager, which, in my view, would have been an unofficial role?

I do not see why Mbeki's ambition to cling onto the presidency of the country, or that of the ANC, should have a bearing on an issue of national concern.

It has become obvious that we need a fresh-thinking president and a cabinet that will tackle mainly crime, poverty and HIV-Aids.
