I was saddened by the callous killing of Thato Radebe, 14.

South Africa is indeed ravaged by crime and this barbaric killing sends out a chilling message. I know the government is doing everything in its power to fight crime and punish those who commit crimes, but it is not enough. I also know that the government and the police are not the only ones who are supposed to fight crime. Communities must help.

I feel Thato's gruesome murder was committed by people under the influence of drugs.

No human being could do such a terrible thing unless he were insane or on drugs. I therefore urge President Thabo Mbeki to take the crime issue seriously because it's a priority. Something must be done, even if it means reviewing our constitution to deal with killers.

The levels of crime are high and we cannot stand back and say and do nothing. A referendum should be held to get the nation's views about crime.

My view is that those who kill should be hanged. It is the only way we can stop these senseless and barbaric killings.

We cannot afford to have killers roaming our streets freely without anything being done. The government should take the issue of crime seriously.

We need to imitate countries that are successfully dealing with crime because it needs to stop.
