A VIP protection unit constable who allegedly killed a woman in a tavern about two weeks ago will be charged with murder.

Captain Thozama Solani said the policeman, who is assigned to the Bhisho legislature, was in a "critical but stable condition" at an East London hospital and would be arrested as soon as he recovered.

The constable allegedly stormed into a tavern in King William's Town and shot Pretty Sofatsha, 29, four times in full view of the patrons before turning the gun on himself. He was seriously wounded in the head.

Solani said the constable, who is not under police guard, would not escape from custody.

"We know the man and have no fears that he might run," she said.

At least eight spent cartridges and two live bullets were recovered from the murder scene. The police are still searching for the murder weapon.

The VIP protection unit last week said that the gun with which Sofatsha was shot was privately owned and was not a VIP-issued firearm.

"Nobody knows the sequence of events and it's only the suspect that will tell exactly what happened," Solani said of the motive for the incident.
