ANC faces fierce by-election war

A fierce battle is expected today when three political parties try to end the reign of the ANC in ward 18 in Rustenburg, North West.

A fierce battle is expected today when three political parties try to end the reign of the ANC in ward 18 in Rustenburg, North West.

The ward became vacant on the death of ANC councillor Mapula Khunou last month.

Four political parties have registered to contest the by-election.

The candidates are Abinar Benny Segaole of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Baitlotli Mlangeni of the ANC, Moitlamo Maphunye of the Independent Democrats and Monnapula Raymond Segami of the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP).

Voting stations will open at 7am and close at 9pm. About 556 people have registered to vote in the election.

Two by-elections will be held in Christiana, in Lekwa-Teemane.

In ward 3 the candidates are Rudolf Hottie, an independent, Mandla Mabala of the ANC and Kagisho Itebogeng of the UCDP.

Ward 6 will be contested by Moipone Makame, an independent, Motlalepula Otola of the ANC, Daniel Muller of the Christiana Belasting Betalers Vereniging and Puleng Lorraine Tukula of the UCDP.

The Independent Electoral Commission's Pansy Tlakula said ward by-elections would also take place in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Western Cape today. - Sapa
