Motorists can expect welcome relief on Wednesday when the petrol price will drop by 23 cents a litre, according to the Minerals and Energy Department.

The price of wholesale diesel will drop between 6c and 9c, wholesale paraffin by 26c and retail paraffin by 34c a litre. A significant cut was on the cards, provided that the daily over-recovery remained at or above the January 15 level.

This follows January's price increases of 5c a litre for 91 octane, 6c a litre for 93 octane and 8c a litre for 95 octane.

The latest price cut will bring the total drop to 129c a litre since August with petrol now costing R5,51 at the coast and R5,75 in Gauteng. - Sapa
