Two failures refused a second chance

The future of two Limpopo pupils hangs in the balance because schools in the area refuse to admit them.

Both students claimed they have been rejected because they failed grade 12 last year.

Ndivhoniswani Mudau, 17, and Endlani Joyce Baloyi, 26, said though they are willing to repeat grade 12 at their previous school, Tombolagole Secondary School principal, Nkhangweleni Mulaudzi and the school's governing body (SGB), have refused to take them back.

Baloyi said the principal told her that she was too old to be accepted back in grade 12.

The pupils said their parents tried to intervene, but were unsuccessful. They said what was frustrating them was that while they had transfer letters from their previous school, other local schools have also turned them down.

"There are some students who are older than me and are repeating grade 12 at the my previous school.

"But the principal is not kicking them out," said Baloyi.

"We are sick and tired of looking for a school that will take us."

When approached for comment, Mulaudzi said he had nothing to say about the two pupils.

"If you need information ask the SGB about this matter because they are the decision-makers at the school," said Mulaudzi before switching off his cellphone.

SGB chairman Elias Tshitangoni Mapfumo declined to comment.

Ndo Mangala, a provincial education department spokesman, said he was not aware of the situation of the two pupils. He said the department would investigate the matter.

"The principal is not allowed to refuse to re-admit a pupil who failed grade 12," said Mangala. "We are aware that some pupils in grade 12 are over 18 years, but there is no need to refuse them admission if they failed for the first time."
