A schoolgirl who falsely accused her school teacher of rape has now been charged with perjury.

The 20-year-old pupil from Mbhudula Secondary School in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga, this week confessed to lying to the police about the alleged rape.

Mbuzini police spokesman Sibusiso Masing said: "In her withdrawal statement she told police that the teacher was her boyfriend and that she laid charges against him to get back at him for paying ilobolo for another girl with whom he has a child."

The pupil accused the teacher of raping her on three occasions last year. She laid charges against him on January 2 and he was arrested and released on bail.

On Thursday the Nkomazi regional court withdrew charges against the 26-year-old teacher and immediately charged the pupil with perjury. She will appear in court soon.

But yesterday provincial police commissioner, Afrika Khumalo, said the police were not allowed to withdraw the case against the teacher.

l In Buffelspruit, near Malelane, a teacher at Loti Primary School has been fired by the Education Department for allegedly raping a pupil during a grade 7 farewell party last year.

The teacher was arrested and is out on bail.

At the same school an HIV-positive teacher was alleged to have raped a 15-year-old girl in 2004 but died during the course of the trial.
