ATM blasts yield no return for robbers

Nonhlanhla Nkosi, a petrol attendant, was going about her business at work when she heard a loud bang.

The sound went off again and then again in Mahushu near Hazyview, Mpumalanga.

When she peeped through a window she sawthe ATM machine nearby was in flames.

"The bang went off three times and we were too scared to go out. I saw the whole drama unfold through the window," a shocked Nkosi said.

Inspector Jiyela Sibiya said police were looking for three suspects who were seen running away from the scene at about 12.40am on Friday.

Sibiya said the monitoring agency phoned the Masoyi police and reported three suspicious men near the ATM.

"We ordered the patrolling officers to rush to the spot. When the police arrived they saw three men running into nearby bush. By then the machine had been blown up with a gas cylinder," he said.

But the suspects failed to get money from the machine.

l A Standard Bank ATM was blown up early on Saturday at a shopping complex in Orange Farm, Johannesburg.

The front part was opened but the perpetrators were unable to get to the money.
