A young man in KwaZulu-Natal has confessed to bludgeoning and stabbing his grandmother to death.

The Umzumbe magistrates' court last week ruled that 20-year-old Samkelo Mlobela be referred to a mental hospital for observation after he had confessed to having smashed his grandmother with a sewing machine before stabbing her several times.

Alebertina Shabalala, 74, of Mahwaqa in Hibberdene, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, died at the scene in her home.

A suicide note was found in Mlobela's room. It said: "I am prepared to die."

Mlobela told the court that he did not feel remorse for his deed.

"She deserved to die the way she did and I'm happy for killing her because she hated me. All those who hate me must die," he said.

l Meanwhile, also in the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, a 46-year-old woman is expected to appear in the Port Shepstone magistrates' court today facing a charge of aiding and abetting prisoners to escape from police custody.

This follows the escape of Wade Schoeman, Fana Nhlumanyo, Thandisizwe Mlangeni and Ntsikelelo Nqaza, all in their twenties, from their cells in the Paddock police station on January 30.

After their escape, police launched an intensive investigation and arrested a woman related to one of the prisoners who is believed to have smuggled tools into the cells which the prisoners used to break free.

Superintendent Zandra Hechter, spokesman for the Umzimkhulu police, yesterday said: "We believe that she assisted the escapees by taking in some implements they used to saw through the grills when she visited one of them before the escape took place."

She said the escaped prisoners were facing charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and dealing in dagga.

"We urge members of the public not to try and apprehend the suspects but to call the police because they are extremely dangerous," Hechter said.
