A man appeared in the Johannesburg high court yesterday charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of a six-year-old girl.
On October 7 2005 police found the body of six-year-old Michaela Ghairoenisha Lee, who had gone missing from home the previous day, in an area of open ground in Eldorado Park.
Her body lay next to a man's underwear, two blood-stained rocks, two bags of pornographic material, a blood-stained piece of glass and a page from a pornographic magazine.
Her body was naked from the waist down. Blood was still flowing from her private parts and her neck, which had been broken, had a cut below her chin.
This was revealed in the testimony of Inspector Daniel Rudolph Oosthuizen in the Johannesburg high court during the trial of Ronald Bruce Jones, who pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, two counts of indecent assault, rape and murder.
The state alleges that on October 6 2005 Jones called the child while she was playing outside her grandmother's home and sent her to buy a cigarette. He then allegedly followed her and took her to the veld where he forced her to touch his private parts before he had anal and vaginal sexual intercourse with her. He then allegedly slit and broke her neck.
He told the court, through his defence advocate Mpho Milubi, that he was at his friend's place on the day Lee went missing.
Oosthuizen said that when he arrived at the scene "there was a blood-like substance coming from her private parts".
"I also found a green piece of glass near the body. It had a blood-like substance [on it]."
Oosthuizen said he believed the two blood-stained rocks found nearby were also used to kill Lee.
Lee's parents, Magdeline Lee and Abu-bak'r Ganchie, had earlier told the court of their search for their daughter the previous day.
The trial was adjourned to Monday.
