Twenty people were killed and two critically injured when a municipal truck collided with a minibus taxi in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

The minibus was travelling from Embalenhle to King William's Town, in Eastern Cape, on Wednesday night when it collided head-on with the truck on the R546 near Standerton.

Police spokesman Abie Khoabane said 16 people were killed at the scene and four died in hospital.

"The two survivors are in a critical condition in Evander Hospital," said Khoabane.

The police said the truck was overtaking a car when it collided with the taxi.

The provincial roads and transport department has launched an investigation.

The department's Vukani Mnyandu said that the stretch of road on which the accident happened was not regarded as particularly dangerous.

A fortnight ago 17 people were killed when a taxi collided with a truck in Ermelo.
