Tobacco companies are lying when they say that light cigarettes are a healthier alternative for smokers.

This is the view of Xandra van Biljon, a nurse who works with ill smokers.

She appealed to MPs yesterday to have the word "light" removed from all cigarette packs. Biljon was speaking to parliament's health portfolio committee.

Van Biljon said: "More than 90 percent of our clients changed at one stage or another to a so-called light cigarette. Companies created the false impression that they will smoke healthier."

She said that people who changed to light cigarettes smoked more and inhaled deeper.
