A 22-year-old Mpumalanga man killed himself after his wife and his girlfriend came to blows on Monday afternoon.

Surprise Mgiba, who was unemployed, used his unlicensed 9mm pistol to commit suicide at his parents' home in Bhekiswayo, near Hazyview.

Mgiba was at his parent's home with his wife when his girlfriend came to the gate.

His wife then confronted the woman and told her to stay away from her husband.

The two women then started fighting and Mgiba went to the gate and began beating them, apparently in an attempt to stop the fight.

Police said the girlfriend then ran away and Mgiba followed her, beating her until she got to her parents' home.

When he returned home his wife had left to fetch water from a street tap. Mgiba then took his unlicensed firearm and shot himself in the head.

Masoyi police spokesman Jiyela Sibiya said Mgiba's mother heard the gunshot and went to investigate. She found her son lying dead in a pool of blood.

The girlfriend told police she had gone to Mgiba's house to end their love affair, but she was not able to do that because of the fight.

Mgiba left an incomplete note, which read: "I'm sorry Lindiwe do not forget that I love you, try to get . "
