Want to be a jewellery designer?

l To become a jewellery designer you need to be creative, with an appreciation of colour, shape and texture; have an understanding of metals, gemstones and other materials; good hand-eye coordination; be able to work accurately and pay attention to detail and have strong business skills.

l Matric is essential, with art and technical drawing a plus for admission into a tertiary institution.

l Most institutions have a selection test for admission to the course and expect a portfolio of your work.

l Jewellery design is a three-year course at institutions such as the University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology and at private institutions.

l Working in a jewellery shop one can expect to earn about R2500 as a starting salary, while an apprenticeship salary could be between R5000 and R6000, increasing with experience.
