A teacher who allegedly held up a shop in Mpumalanga and stole R200 was arrested by members of the community and handed over to the police.

Ngcongcoshe George Shungube, 40, a teacher from Sidloko Primary School in Mbuzini, and his accomplice, Sthembiso Mahlalela, appeared in the Nkomazi magistrates' court yesterday on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

They were not asked to plead and the case was postponed to February 15. The two were remanded in custody.

Police spokesman Constable Sbusiso Masinga said the teacher and his young friend went to a shop in Goba township on Saturday and stood in the queue with other customers.

When it was their turn to pay the teacher allegedly gave the cashier a R50 note.

"When the cashier was preparing to give him change he allegedly pulled out a firearm and demanded money from the cashier. They took R200 and fled," Masinga said yesterday.

The security guard outside the shop blew his whistle and bystanders chased the suspects. After catching them, the bystanders handed them over to the police.

Besides the current case, Shungube is out on bail for being in possession of an illegal firearm and dagga last year.

He appeared in court on Friday on the two charges. The case was postponed and his bail extended.

l In December last year a teacher was shot and killed by security guards after he had robbed a filling station in Thulamahashe, near Bushbuckridge.

Elone Sibuyi was a teacher at Soshangane High School.
