ANC colludes in robbing peopleof their land

It is terrible how the plight of indigenous communities in platinum mining areas is being ignored. There is good work by activists, such as Richard Spoor, but government collusion and the sheer weight of the occupational health and safety transgressions mean that conditions will not improve in the foreseeable future.

It is criminal that the communities are being robbed of their communal land with little or no compensation in Limpopo. Chief among these mining conglomerates is Anglo-American, represented by Anglo-Plat, but there is also complicity by BEE mines such as African Rainbow Minerals (ARM).

The government must prevent the widespread attempts to bully communities off their land. Demanding a fair deal for the people is not enough.

It is sad that private ownership, which robs the nation of its collective wealth and material, and which is the basis of national reconstruction and development, is being allowed. This is crony capitalism at its worst, sinfully flaunted by the ANC and its alliance partners.

The ANC refused to nationalise the old mines because of its negotiated settlement with the previous government. It should stop neglecting its responsibilities to our people.

The ANC is throwing away the opportunity to build our national wealth and to respond decisively to our developmental challenges.

Mpumelelo Toyise, Randburg
