Plea to communities to help fight crime

Mpumalanga police commissioner Afrika Khumalo says the main objective of celebrating National Police Day is to reflect on the successes and achievements of the police and to reinforce the nation's confidence in the future of safety and security in South Africa.

Speaking during National Police Day celebrations at KaNyamazane Stadium outside Nelspruit on Saturday, Khumalo said: "Some people may be asking why the police are celebrating when a perception exists that crime still takes control of our society.

"Ladies and gentlemen, no criminal will take control of our province because we are stronger than the criminals and we will trample them with the strength of an elephant."

Khumalo said the police could not achieve results without a strong partnership with the community.

"Our partnership is evident through the existing community policing forum structures at all our stations," he said.

Crimes against women and children were a priority and the province had managed to reduce contact crimes by 34percent, which was far above the national target of seven to 10 percent.

"Our performance is measured through the results that are produced by stations and service delivery can only be achieved through the implementation of Batho Pele principles," he said.
