DJ Fresh, a presenter on 5FM, was yesterday among a group of volunteers who helped to repaint the orphanage, Door of Hope, in Berea, Johannesburg.

Aided by his listeners, the former YFM DJ also built a makeshift studio for him to broadcast his show from 4pm to 7pm.

"These volunteers chose to come on board. Through my show I asked people to pitch in and help paint this important home," he said.

The orphanage houses abandoned infants and toddlers.

"Most of the people who leave these children are desperate mothers who, instead of killing their children, choose to leave them here for adoption," said Kate Allen, the director of the Door of Hope.
