A woman has been arrested after the body of her newborn baby girl was found in a garden.

The infant's body was found by a passer-by on Monday morning in Dutywa, Eastern Cape.

The woman, 20, from Ngqamakhwe, was arrested on Tuesday and is expected to appear in the Dutywa magistrates' court today.

Police said a placenta was found in bucket next to the baby's body and a post-mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Captain Lingisile Magama said: "The baby was naked when she was discovered by the passer-by in the garden."

The baby's mother was reportedly visiting her boyfriend in Dutywa at the time of the discovery. It is not clear if the boyfriend was the baby's father.
