An Afrikaans-speaking mother is suing a college because it did not teach her son in his home language, apparently causing him to fail.

Marietjie Pienaar, of Barberton, Mpumalanga, is suing the Lowveld College of Agriculture for R80000 after her son failed his second year.

She said she took her son to the college because it advertised in the grade 12 prospectus that courses were offered in both Afrikaans and English. She says that her son, Harold, failed his studies because he was only taught in English, in which he lacks fluency.

George Xaba, the principal, said the matter was sub judice and that he could not comment.
