More than 500 people, including Afrikaans pop star Steve Hofmeyr, yesterday protested outside the Scottburgh magistrates' court in KwaZulu-Natal where three men appeared in connection with the rape of three women.

The women, who are all from Durban, were raped and robbed on December 29 while staying at a beach house in Pennington near Scottburgh.

Magistrate Chris Schoeman postponed the bail hearing until tomorrow, and police had to order a crowd of protestors to leave the grounds surrounding the court.

Shouts of "One rapist, one bullet" and "Bring them out, we just want to cut off their thingies" reverberated around the back of the courtroom.

Hofmeyr, who owns a house in Pennington, said: "The people here have shown commitment. They have a new common ground to unite against this scum."

Two of the victims are believed to be the daughters of a Durban minister and the third is the daughter of a teacher.

One of the protestors' placards read: "We whinge in pain while you binge on the gravy train, our honourable minister of security."

One protester, who did not want to be named, said: "Jail is not the place for these people. Don't educate them. Isolate them and then castrate them."

Hofmeyr and several other men attempted to rock the police van carrying the three accused when they left court. Others shouted abuse at those inside the van as it left the court buildings. - Sapa
