Spurned man kills himself

A 37-year-old woman from Mantja village, near Mafikeng in North West, was repeatedly struck with a hammer when she turned down a marriage proposal from her lover.

A Molopo police spokesman, Captain Job Mothibi, said Harrison Sechele and Sana Gaonakala quarrelled when he proposed marriage to her on Friday.

"Sechele proposed marriage when they returned from Rustenburg where he is employed, but his girlfriend spurned his proposal.

"Sechele became angry and hit Gaonakala on the back of her head and behind the left ear," said Mothibi. "She lost consciousness."

It is alleged that Sechele thought the woman was dead and ran away. He returned and took a bottle of thinners and disappeared into the woods.

The police found Sechele's lifeless body. - Elisha Molefe
