More than R10million damage was caused when a supermarket and two other businesses caught fire in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, on Sunday afternoon.

The owner, Ayoob Vohra, told Sowetan that the fire started at 2.30pm, but the fire brigade arrived only two hours later and then ran out of water.

He said two women selling vegetables outside the buildings came running to his house behind the businesses to report the blaze.

"We tried to extinguish the fire in vain."

He said he lost fabric worth more than R5million and electronics and groceries worth more than R5million.

No one was injured and police are investigating the cause of the fire. The fire department could not be reached for comment.
