Santos' attacking midfielder Marawaan Bantam is one of the three players Bidvest Wits are looking to sign before the January transfer window period is over.

Wits started the season on a high note, winning a number of games, but now they seem to be in a slump.

They are seventh on the log after yet another loss to Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.

Bantam, who was a surprise spectator when Santos drew 0-0 against Maritzburg United away in a Castle League fixture on Friday night, confirmed that Wits have shown interest in his services.

He said there are a number of teams that have shown interest, but Wits were hungrier than the other clubs.

"The matter is between my team and them. I believe the negotiations are at an advanced stage.

"I'm just waiting for confirmation maybe tomorrow [today]," said Bantam.

Wits coach Abubakaar "Boebie" Solomons confirmed that Bantam was among the players they would be signing.

He said they are looking at other players from Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and possibly Ajax.

"We need to strengthen our squad if we want to do better on the log. I am satisfied with the current team, but we need them as a backup.

"I need a defender, midfielder and striker," said Solomons.

Sowetan reliably learnt that The Students have signed a Mozambican defender.

Though Solomons was cagey at first, he finally confirmed that they had acquired the services of a 24-year-old left back.

"We have signed him, but are still waiting for his papers," was all he would say.
