Written in blood that violent crime is out of control

We were shocked to read another report of violent crime that resulted in an 18-month-old toddler smearing herself with her parents' blood.

We were shocked to read another report of violent crime that resulted in an 18-month-old toddler smearing herself with her parents' blood.

This heinous, abominable crime happened in Mpumalanga a few days after the president told the public that crime in South Africa is not out of control.

We disagree with him and maintain that the unacceptable high levels of violent crime are a clear sign that crime is out of control.

There is not a single day that one does not hear or read about the murder of innocent civilians and the rape of innocent children.

The government must stop telling the public to help fight crime while they fail to protect the whistleblowers. Too many people have got into trouble trying to expose corruption and criminal activities. We believe whistle- blowers must be rewarded and protected by the government from victimisation.

If this is not done, violent crime will not subside.

While we want to see a successful 2010 Soccer World Cup, we have to caution that if the government does not stop violent crime this opportunity might slip through our fingers.

Criminals must be punished severely and taught that crime does not pay.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the blood-soaked baby found next to the lifeless bodies of her slain parents.
