'Redeployment is hurting children'

The disbanding of the Child Protection Unit has resulted in children's cases being marginalised because of a lack of expertise, said Child Welfare South Africa's new chief executive, Ashley Theron.

The disbanding of the Child Protection Unit has resulted in children's cases being marginalised because of a lack of expertise, said Child Welfare South Africa's new chief executive, Ashley Theron.

"The mainstreaming of these units has taken the focus away from children and further added to their neglect," he said.

Theron said members used to be continually trained and had the necessary resources to handle cases involving children.

Members of the Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units were redeployed to police stations last year in a move widely criticised by opposition parties, NGOs and women and children's groups. - Sapa
