Strong opposition is essential for healthy democracy

The DA-led multiparty coalition administration of the Cape Town metro has been dealt a severe blow by the alleged clandestine talks between the ANC and the African Muslim Party during the December recess.

The DA-led multiparty coalition administration of the Cape Town metro has been dealt a severe blow by the alleged clandestine talks between the ANC and the African Muslim Party during the December recess.

It will be a sad day for multiparty democracy should the move to disband Helen Zille's government become a reality.

As a country still to witness a healthy political opposition environment, the move is going to deprive us of an opportunity to cultivate a citadel of active opposition politics without fear or favour.

I am neither a member nor a supporter of the DA, but a proponent of multiparty democracy. It is my yet-to-be-realised dream to live in a country where people do not think alike, where diversity of thought is embraced and not viewed as being counter-revolutionary.

Cape Town must not return to the hands of power mongers and demagogues like Skwatsha and company.

The incompetence and favouritism that characterised Nomaindia Mfeketho's administration is one of the reasons I and many others have concluded that it is premature for the ANC to return to power.

I hope the ID, as a balancing power, will realise the importance of its role in contributing positively to the attainment of a stable and effective political environment.

The Cape Town project must succeed.

Teboho Katze, Braamfontein
